It's in progress. There are a few radio stations already transmitting digital. It's being called HD radio by a lot of people. Another term is IBOC for in band on channel. See the link below.

The change is TO DIGITAL **not** HD.

The new system in the US is more commonly ATSC and is 100% digital unlike the present NTSC system which is analog.

Europe chose to use a BETTER system for the digital TV called DVB-T which is similar to the DVB-S system used by Dish Network.

An OPTION of the ATSC system is to send:

1) Upto 4 SD or normal streams
2) 1 HD channel in 1080p
3)
Pending no more extensions broadcasters have till 2009 to switch formats and clear the frequencies.

Those using antennas to get their TV will need to get a converter box to connect to their existing TV or get a new TV. Those on other forms like DBS (dish) or cable may not need a converter but may need a new TV to display HD if your interested.

I personally have seend HD, and I am NOT impressed. Much hype about nothing.

There ARE future plans to convert the FM band to a form of digital in the future as well. Its called HD FD radio from iBuquity. This actually will be an analog and digital compatiable signal. Theres a few test sites right now.

first of all, it will not change to hd for another 20 years, giving ppl enough time to buy a hd ready tv or buy a hd receiver, there is no plan for radio since the quality isnt really worth it. audio quality really wouldnt improve very much
