The HD Radio signal is subject to the same signal strength as the regular analog signal. However, the sound quality is greatly improved if in range.

HD radio is a new format that is mainly seen right now on FM. It allows for "near CD quaility".

The AM conversion has had some issues. Mainly, like you said, AM stations propogate differently and can be heard from great distances, so measures must be taken to make sure they do not interfere.

Once you get out of a certain range of "power" from the radio station, the signal will go analog. So as long as analog stays on you should be able to listen to distant stations. Once it goes digital and you leave the contour of the minimum signal to achieve a digital lock you will not be able to hear the station.
